Issues Final Report
Interest in using biodiesel as a home heating oil continues to grow in Vermont. More than a dozen fuel dealers throughout the state now offer various biodiesel blends (a.k.a. bioheat) to their home-heating customers and more than 275,000 gallons of biodiesel blends were sold in Vermont in 2005 for both transportation and space heating.
Because of this growth in interest, the Vermont Bioheat Program was created to help contribute to the understanding of B20 biodiesel as a residential heating fuel. Vermont Bioheat Program research, which took place over the 2005-2006 heating season, was primarily concerned with a comparison of heating system performance when using B20 bioheat and conventional No.2 fuel oil. The Vermont Bioheat Program research builds on bioheat laboratory and field testing previously conducted in New York, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts.
